Leafy Meadows is a 34 bedded residential care home for the elderly. Set in 5 acres of lovely Derbyshire Countryside, we are located just 2 miles from the Peak District National Park. All of our rooms are en-suite and all have lovely scenic views.
We are proud of our award-winning activity-based service and we recognise the huge benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for your loved ones. Our Motto is “we are, what we do” and we want our residents to live a “meaningful life”.
- Elderly Residential
Every resident has their own person centred, choice led activity plan, tailored to meet their needs and preferences. To help with planning we draw on life histories. Plans are constantly updated and shared across the staff team.
We have one full-time and one part time activity coordinator on site to plan, deliver and evaluate our residents activity plans.
Our residents often take a trip to the local theatre to see plays and musicals, pantomimes are a big favourite. We sometimes partner with local theatre groups to put on our own productions. We have our very own movie theatre on site and at the interval we serve choc ices and popcorn down the aisles. Singers and musicians visit the home and we often incorporate them into our themed events.
We offer music therapy as part of our person centred activity programme which can be 1:1 or in a group.
Crafting is a big favourite and we have a substantial stock of materials for any number of crafts.
A varied outdoor programme is on offer, taking advantage of the nearby peak district National Park with it’s many places of interest such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall to the picturesque towns of Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton. There are lots of places to stop off amongst the park such as garden centres, country pubs and restaurants.
We host regular petting sessions and have links with local farms and animal rescue centres who regularly bring along Dogs, Rabbits and other more exotic creatures such as snakes and lizards. We have regular visits to an equine centre, recognising the wonderful benefits from spending time with such intuitive animals as horses and ponies.
Our activity programmes are geared to restorative practice. We seek to stimulate muscle memory by re-engaging in hobbies, pastimes, sports and recreation often drawn from a residents past through the process of Neuromuscular Re-education.
We use the latest touch screen and projector based interactive games and the most recent immersive VR software to improve cognition on the one hand and to promote calmer states and improve well-being on the other. Promoting play and fun.
Maintaining physical health is paramount. We actively deliver activities designed to maintain muscle, tendon and ligament function. Many of our activities focus on improving and maintaining core strength, whilst others promote cardiorespiratory and cardiovascular health.
We have a designated sensory area and we provide a range of activities tailored towards the stimulation of the senses, using vision, hearing, touch, taste and smell to stimulate memory and enhance positive emotions.
Every activity we undertake is set up to succeed. And by that we mean a sense of fun and enjoyment mixed with fulfillment and mastery. All of our activities are planned, resourced, delivered and evaluated to ensure a successful outcome. We want our residents to continually engage in meaningful activity so that they may reap the physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual benefits that activity brings us.
We know through years of experience that meaningful activity can bring huge benefits to our service users from a physiological, psychological, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual standpoint. To deliver on this, we have built a dedicated activities organisation team backed by a passionate and like-minded Registered Manager and coordinated by a very experienced and knowledgeable team leader. All of our 35 staff have training in activities and positive engagement.
We have regular visits from Occupational and Recreation Therapists who along with our service users and their families help us to create person centred, choice led inclusive and engaging outcome focused activity programmes that are sometimes challenging but always fun and memorable.
Our activity programme is fully funded all year round and we have a range of talented performers who regularly visit the home. We celebrate the seasons in style and organise all kinds of fun activities throughout the year and some that we take a little more seriously like our indoor league, archery and chess tournaments, where some of our service users compete with other care homes. It’s a great way for them to meet new people and ones that share a similar passion and we think that brings a little more meaning to the event. We also play host to various local drama productions and the areas Christmas dinner dance for over 200 service users.
We have a fantastic community component to our activity programme and we take advantage of the many places of interest on our doorstep like Chatsworth house, Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton. Back at Leafy Meadows we have a 10 piece cardiovascular gymnasium, a sensory room with the latest technology, 50 seater cinema room and the latest Virtual Reality headsets to use therapeutically or just for fun! We have 2 miles of landscaped gardens with several designated plots for a spot of horticulture for our service users. There are several areas where you can just relax and take in the views, very popular in the warmer months, with a spot of tea and a few rounds of sandwiches.
At Leafy Meadows we have a history of partnering with leading edge innovative organisations to constantly improve our activities programme this has allowed us to stay ahead of the curve and secure funding from a host of sources to strengthen our activity offering even further.
In elderly care we are essentially looking after the best interests of the people who brought us into this world, our parents. They introduced us to sport, recreation and leisure and eventually found us a vehicle to express and enjoy ourselves. These activities made us feel more positive inside, competent, valued and confident, showed us how the value of teamwork, camaraderie, new friendships of healthy eating, of training properly of learning new skills. In many cases these virtues have stayed with us for most of adult lives.
Can you remember your first pair of roller skates? Or football boots, or bicycle or skateboard, or computer, watch, swimming or horse-riding lesson, or maybe your first pet?
You only have to look at lockdown to see what happens when we can’t enjoy our leisure time, when our mental and physical health suffers. Therefore it Is the very least we can do to repay the debt to our parents and ensure that their remaining years on this earth have some meaning and value and fun!
We like to think that our activity programme goes at least some of the way to repaying that debt and with your guidance we can do more.
